| The Black Lung Program |
A disease which results from the inhalation and deposition of coal mine dust in the lungs and the reaction of lung tissue to its presence. |
A chronic dust disease of the lung and related disease conditions, including respiratory and pulmonary impairments, arising out of coal mine employment. |
| Coal Miner Pneumoconiosis |
A disease of the lungs caused by continued inhalation of the dust of siliceous minerals and characterized by progressive fibrosis and a chronic shortness of breath |
Silicosis occurs if a person works where the concentration of particles is high. Over a very long period of time, the defense system may fail and dust-laden macrophages may collect in the lungs, therefore causing chronic restrictive lung disease. |
